Risk of hypothermia during skiing holiday
Warm, waterproof clothing is very important during your winter holiday, but not everyone knows this.
Especially in the colder months of December and January, it is often very cold on top of the mountain. Especially when there's an icy wind blowing and the sun is not shining, you should watch out for hypothermia.
If you watch out of the window in the morning and see a blue, sunny sky, it doesn't have to be warm. Also weather can change very quickly in the mountains.
Hypothermia occurs when the body heat falls under its normal temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. The body responds by trying to retent the heat. You will start to shiver all over and become pale.
When the body temperature drops below 34 degrees Celsius, you are suffering from severe hypothermia. This could happen for example when you are standing still outside in the cold for a long time or if you are on the ground after an accident. The person might loose its consciousness.
To avoid hypothermia good equipment and preparation are essential. Below a checklist of things you need to pack for your ski holiday. Think different layers:
Mittens (possibly with thin thermal gloves underneath)
Thermo underwear (shirt and trousers)
Fleece or wool sweater with high connection in the neck (then a scarf is not necessarily required)
Good ski jacket that ventilates and retents heat (nowadays a good coat does not need to be thick)
Ski pants (waterproof)
Ski helmet (not only safe but also warm)
Ski socks
What you can also do to avoid hypothermia is eat calorie-rich foods and stop for a coffee or hot chocolate!
